Prior to Covid 19 the NEC met 5 times per year, a mixture of 3-hour meetings and full weekends. This amounted to around 24 hours of business over the year, excluding emergency phone meetings and sub committees and time spent together informally. In an NEC election year, additional time also has to be set aside for induction. Following the start of the pandemic, the last face-to-face meeting of the NEC was in February 2020. The current NEC is yet to meet face to face and has faced the additional challenge of a delayed start to their term of office.
Although zoom meetings have enabled the business of the NEC to continue, and to do so in a way that is more convenient for many, less of a time commitment and much less expensive, they have presented a challenge to the amount of business that can be completed in each meeting and to the opportunities for less formal discussion.
As we emerge from the lockdowns, we now have a choice about how the NEC meets going forward, and are seeking your views on the best model.
