Party organisation – Co-operative Party

Branches

Local groups of members who meet to discuss co-op policies and campaigns, help elect co-operative candidates and support their local co-op movement.

Party councils

Groupings of branches often covering one or more counties or local authority areas – they’re made up of representatives of local branches and co-op societies and help deal with the administration and development of the Co-operative Party in your area.

Regions and nations

Groupings that bring together local parties to run training and development events: these are Scotland and Northern Ireland, and Wales, as well as the nine regions of England.

National Executive Committee

Elected every three years by the Party’s members, with one representative per region or nation. It is responsible for overseeing the management of the Party on behalf of its members. The next elections take place in Summer 2017.

Annual Conference

The Party’s biggest event of the year, bringing members together across the country to decide the Party’s policy, priorities and campaigns as well as a chance to meet other members, take
part in training and engage with the wider co-operative movement.

You can choose to come yourself as a visitor or your local Party can send you as a delegate.

Society members

Co-operative societies who are also members of the Co-operative Party. Society members run businesses across the UK, support local parties and play a role in Party democracy. Members include the Co-operative Group, Midcounties, Central England, East of England, Scotmid, Chelmsford Star and Revolver Coffee.

Constituency Labour Parties

Co-operative Party branches affiliate to their local Constituency Labour Party (CLP). This enables them to send delegates to Labour meetings and provides a process for selecting joint
Labour & Co-operative candidates at elections.
