SUMMARY:Member briefing - Building Resilience: the case for co-operative agriculture
DESCRIPTION:Member briefing: BUILDING RESILIENCE – the case for co-operative agriculture\n\nAs the Government works toward its commitment to double the size of the co-operative economy\, agricultural co-operation stands out as one of the most powerful and underused opportunities for change.  The Co-operative Party’s report ‘Building Resilience: the case for co-operative agriculture’ argues that agricultural co-operatives offer a practical and potentially transformational response to the UK’s dependence on complex supply chains heavily reliant on imports from abroad.\nThe report calls for a modern institutional model capable of redistributing power though our food system. By enabling farmers to pool resources\, share risk\, and invest collectively\, co-operatives reduce exposure to volatile input markets and strengthen bargaining power across the supply chain. They create the conditions for shorter\, more resilient supply networks\, and for greater retention of value within rural economies. With more than 500 agricultural co-operatives and almost 236\,000 members already active across the UK\, co-operation in the sector is far from new. But the bigger opportunity lies in what comes next: how co-operatives can scale their impact to help farmers respond to rising pressure from price volatility\, climate disruption\, and uncertain investment conditions. \nThis is a practical and proven way to build resilience\, productivity\, and sustainability across the agri-food system as well as how it can help deliver key national priorities set out in the UK Food Strategy\, the Farming Profitability Review\, and the Land Use Framework. \nMembers are invited to join this online-only Zoom event to hear more about the report and the Party’s case for expanding the sector. \nWith Policy Officer\, Dan Monaghan.

SUMMARY:Co-op Party Live - Policy: A Community ReInvestment Act
DESCRIPTION:Co-op Party Live – Policy:\n\nIn January\, Labour & Co-operative MP Gareth Thomas introduced a 10 Minute Rule Bill on a Banks (Financial Exclusion and Access to Finance) Bill to parliament. The introduction of the new Bill – often called a British Community Reinvestment Act – would establish a requirement for major financial institutions to work with purpose-driven financial institutions\, such as credit unions and community development finance institutions (CDFIs)\, to expand lending to people who are financially excluded.\nFinancial exclusion is a major problem in the UK\, leaving many people unable to save and invest\, exposing them to financial insecurity\, lowering living standards and often entrenching poverty. Expanding lending to these underserved people and communities could enable people to begin saving\, invest for the future or provide for their families. It would considerably reduce the number of people dealing with loan sharks and other illegal lenders. \nIn addition\, a new British Community Reinvestment Act would increase lending to small businesses and co-operatives\, which are often underserved by high street banks. Ensuring effective lending on fair terms to these SMEs and co-operative could kickstart economic growth and help to growth job opportunities across the country. \n\nJoin Gareth Thomas MP to find out why this Bill will have a significant impact on supporting disadvantaged communities – empowering people and local businesses to save and invest in their future. \nThis will take the form of a facilitated discussion followed by a Q&A. \n\n

SUMMARY:Co-op Party Live: Equalities - CEDAW
DESCRIPTION:Co-op Party Live: Equalities – CEDAW\nUnited Nations Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women\nWednesday 25 February at 6:30pm on Zoom\nIn 2026 the UK celebrates the 40th year of ratifying the CEDAW – United Nations Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women. \nCEDAW is the bill of rights for women’s empowerment\, passed in 1979 at the UN and ratified by the UK government in the 1980s. It covers both public and private life and is covers a wide range of areas. To date\, it is the best source in international law of rights protection for women and girls. \nIn 2023\, Cardiff County Council passed a motion making Cardiff a City for CEDAW\, incorporating CEDAW obligations into all of its functions as a City. It is the only City for CEDAW in Europe – so far! The Welsh Government is progressing work to implement CEDAW into Welsh law (international law is not devolved to Welsh Government) and is involved in the reporting process at UK level. \nLed by Welsh co-operative women\, this event will explain more about what CEDAW is\, its importance and how you can get involved in securing rights at a local level.

SUMMARY:Co-op Party Live - Policy: Local Power Plan
DESCRIPTION:Co-op Party Live – Policy:\n\nFor decades\, Co-op Party members have argued that communities should have the power to generate and own their own energy. That’s why the Co-operative Party worked with communities\, the community energy sector and government to turn that idea into a serious national policy. What began with a handful of pioneering communities taking control of their own energy is now being recognised as a central part of Britain’s energy future.\nYesterday\, the government announced the biggest investment in community energy in our country’s history. £1bn of public investment in energy projects owned by communities represents a radical shift in energy ownership\, and it’s needed now more than ever. Now\, the work begins to make sure this investment delivers for communities. To kick off that work\, join Joe Fortune\, Co-operative Party General Secretary\, for a special online members’ briefing at 6pm reacting to this announcement\, explaining more about the Local Power Plan\, and talking about how you and your community can get involved.
