SUMMARY:Co-operation Live – International Women's Day
DESCRIPTION:Co-operation Live:\nHighlighting International Women’s Day\nWednesday 9 March at 6.00pm on Zoom\nEach year International Women’s Day globally celebrates the social\, economic\, cultural\, and political achievements of women. Movements like #MeToo\, #TimesUp and the significant global rise in International Women’s Day activity in every corner of the world – along with the many female-focused days and initiatives around the world – mean gender is firmly on the agenda. \nCo-operative Party members are invited to join us on Wednesday 9th March from 6pm to 7pm on Zoom as we imagine a gender equal world. Our special guest speakers will discuss how we can celebrate the achievements of our elected women Co-operators\, how we can raise awareness\, encourage more women to stand for election and how we can smash the stereotypes that exist as we work towards a world free of bias\, stereotypes\, and discrimination; a world that is diverse\, equitable\, and inclusive; a world where difference is valued and celebrated; and where women’s equality is ensured. \nThis year\, the IWD theme is how we can #BreakTheBias. Whether deliberate or unconscious\, bias makes it difficult for women to move ahead. Knowing that bias exists isn’t enough\, action is needed to level the playing field. As expectations rise and information spreads faster and wider than ever before\, we will address why organisations such as ours must actively address\, scrutinise and accelerate gender parity. \nSpeakers include Kim McGuiness – Northumbria Police & Crime Commissioner; Cllr Abigail Marshall Katung – Co-op Party NEC representative for Yorks & Humber and Leeds City Councillor; Emma Foody – Co-op Party Assistant General Secretary.  The event will be chaired by Cllr Joanna West\, Derby City Councillor and chair of the Party’s Women’s Network. \nThis online event is live captioned for greater accessibility.

SUMMARY:Co-operation Live – Focus on Fairtrade
DESCRIPTION:Co-operation Live:\nFocus on Fairtrade\nWednesday 2 March at 6.00pm on Zoom\nFairtrade is about social\, economic and environmental justice. For two weeks each year\, thousands of individuals\, organisations and groups across the UK come together to highlight Fairtrade Fortnight\, by examining how – in choosing Fairtrade – we can help make a difference to farmers all over the world. \nBack in 1998\, the Co-op was the first supermarket to stock Fairtrade in all it’s stores\, and they’ve been proud to support Fairtrade ever since. \nThis week\, in Co-operation Live\, we are delighted to welcome Orla Waters (she/her) – Policy Development & Planning Manager at The Co-op – as she highlight why their commitment to Fair Trade and the Fair Trade Mark is just as important today. \nThis online event is live captioned for greater accessibility.

SUMMARY:Co-operation Live – Community Power Publication Launch
DESCRIPTION:Co-operation Live:\nCommunity Power Publication Launch\nWednesday 23 February at 6.00pm on Zoom\nCommunity Power is co-operative politics. It’s a politics of empowerment. A new settlement which recognises and strengthens the democratic power of communities rather than top-down targets and reorganisation. A settlement which doesn’t just talk the talk about rebalancing\, but which shifts control from the centre to regions\, councils and communities. \nThat is why we are launching “Community Power” – a new publication which draws on our co-operative values and principles to define the building blocks needed for community power. Our policy officer\, Cllr Anna Birley\, will be joined by guests including Alex Norris MP\, the Shadow Levelling Up Minister and Labour & Co-operative MP for Nottingham North\, to discuss the building blocks of community power\, highlight the places and communities already taking power into their own hands\, and unpicking the rhetoric of the Government’s levelling-up agenda. \nBecause unlike the Conservative’s approach to Levelling Up\, community power done right has the potential to be genuinely transformative. Upending power imbalances in our society and economy allows us to create stronger\, more responsive institutions\, better services\, accountable decision-making and participation at every level of politics. Unlike the Government’s so called levelling-up agenda\, community power results in communities feeling empowered\, because they own a stake in the economy and because public institutions and political decision-making are rewired to ensure they don’t simply have a voice but that it is listened to. \nThis online event will be live captioned for greater accessibility.

SUMMARY:Co-operation Live - A People's BBC
DESCRIPTION:Co-operation Live:\nA People’s BBC\nWednesday 16 February at 6.30pm on Zoom\nSince 2015\, the BBC has faced massive changes to its funding and structure. This has led to cutbacks and controversial decisions such as the axing of free TV licences to over 75s\, without consultation with viewers and listeners. Now\, the Government has announced that it will be freezing the BBC’s funding and looking into axing the licence fee. This could threaten the future of our public broadcaster as we know it. \nThe Co-operative Party and many others believe that it should be viewers and listeners who decide its future\, not the current government’s Ministers or opaque committees. \nJoin this Zoom event as we hear from Philippa Childs – Head of BECTU – Andrew Pakes – Deputy General Secretary Prospect and Emma Foody – Assistant General Secretary Co-op Party – on what’s being done by the Co-op Party and unions representing those in the entertainment industry to lead the campaign to keep the BBC publicly-owned\, and to give licence fee payers a say and stake in its future. \nYou can sign up to our campaign by clicking here: https://party.coop/a-peoples-bbc \nThis online event will be live captioning for increased accessibility.

SUMMARY:Co-operation Live - Why being a Mutual Matters
DESCRIPTION:Co-operation Live:\nWhy being a Mutual Matters\nWednesday 2 February at 6pm on Zoom\nMutuals represent the best of our co-operative values: they’re a fairer\, more ethical way of doing business and give us all a greater say and stake in the institutions that affect our lives. It’s important for our economy to have mutuals owned by millions of ordinary members who have a say over the decisions that business makes – decisions that take a longer-term look\, aren’t motivated by short-term profit\, and have members’ interests at heart. \nJoin Gareth Thomas MP\, chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Mutuals and former chair of the Co-op Party\, and Kate Creagh of the Building Societies Association – as they highlight why we should be strengthening and growing the mutual sector in the UK. \nThis online event will be live captioning for increased accessibility.

SUMMARY:Co-operation Live - a right to food as a legal requirement
DESCRIPTION:Co-operation Live:\nA Right to Food in Legislation \nWednesday 19th January at 6pm on Zoom\nAccess to food is a human right\, but it is currently being denied to too many people across the UK. The Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated this and dependence on food banks and other sources of free food are growing. Under international obligations\, we already have the right to food\, but we believe it is important to enshrine that in law with a regulatory body to oversee implementation. \nJoin Rhoda Grant MSP as she discuss the proposed bill – currently up for consultation before being put to the Scottish Parliament – which will ensure that\, now and in the future\, food is accessible to people – financially and geographically – and that food is adequate in terms of nutrition\, safety and cultural appropriateness. \nWe’ll also hear from Geraint Davies MP and representatives from charities working to stop hunger with the steps being taken to extend this legislative commitment across the whole of the UK.  Geraint is a campaigner on Right to Food and a member of the Environment\, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee which has undertaken inquiries into food supply\, food poverty and the impact of the pandemic on people’s ability to put food on the table. \nDO NOTE: The consultation closes on 16 February. You can add your response electronically by clicking on the link here: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/RightToFood2/ \nThis online event will be live captioning for increased accessibility.

SUMMARY:Co-operation Live - Stop cuts to International Development funding
DESCRIPTION:Co-operation Live:\nStop the cut to International Development Funding \nTuesday 30th November at 6.30pm on Zoom\nEarlier this year\, the UK government reduced its annual aid budget from 0.7% of gross national income (GNI) to 0.5% and the recent budget confirmed that this cut to foreign aid will continue until at least 2024. This represents a decrease of between about £4bn and £5bn.  Charities\, NGOs and others have submitted evidence to Parliament detailing the likely cuts they need to make. The UN’s family planning agency (UNFPA) looks set to lose some 85% of its UK funding with Unicef seeing its funding reduced by about 60% \nWith thousands facing famine in Afghanistan\, humanitarian catastrophes in Yemen and Tigray\, support needed for Syrian and Bangladesh’s Rohingya refugees as well as commitments to help developing countries tackle the impact of climate change\, members are invited to join this zoom event as we examine the impact of these cuts and call for reinstatement of the 0.7%. \nWith Preet Kaur Gill MP\, Secretary of State for International Development and Chair\, Co-operative Party Parliamentary Group. \nThis online event will be live captioned to allow greater accessibility.
