SUMMARY:Co-op Party Live - Policy: the Future Co-op Economy
DESCRIPTION:Co-op Party Live – Policy\n\nThe Future Co-operative Economy\nAs innovation and technological advances transform the way we live and work\, the co-operative movement must be ready to lead and adapt to help create a more equitable economy. In a shifting world of work\, co-operatives have the potential to provide security\, fairness\, and accountability. \nThis online event will explore how co-operative models can harness emerging technologies for the common good\, creating democratic platforms that empower both workers and consumers.  We will discuss how the co-operative model can benefit freelancers\, the self-employed\, and agency workers with improved pay\, working conditions\, and flexibility. \nJoining us are Rose Marley\, CEO of Co-operatives UK\, on the importance and impact of freelance co-operatives and discuss how these can become more commonplace across the UK and Patrick Hurley MP\, the Chair of the Social\, Co-operative and Community Economy All-Party Group\, on the importance of the Government supporting co-operative growth and his experiences supporting new co-operatives prior to entering parliament.  We will also hear directly from a tech co-operative on how it has developed\, the challenges it has faced and future plans for growth. \nThis event is part of the Co-operative Party’s member-led Policy Process – which this year focuses on the ‘future co-operative economy’. There’s still time to take part\, find out more here: Policy Process 2025 \n

DESCRIPTION:Co-op Party Live – Policy\nAcross the UK\, communities are already taking action to meet the challenges we face – whether its food poverty\, high energy prices or the loss of important civic institutions. Communities need to be restored as a serious political and economic force across Britain – empowering people to revive and reshape their local areas. This Co-op Party Live event will look at how local community groups have come together to purchase and transform local assets for the benefit of local residents. \nWe will hear from Nudge Community Builders\, who have helped to revive the historic Union Street in the centre of Plymouth with new community owned assets – including hospitality and retail offerings. \nWe will also hear how local elected representatives can support the development of new community owned assets and businesses – being guided through the process of asset listing and community ownership development. This session hopes to provide clarity on the best ways for communities and councillors to get involved and support new initiatives – helping to ensure community power can be felt in every area of the UK. \nSpeakers include: \n\nHannah Sloggett – Co-Founder\, Nudge Community Builders\nBen Holden\, Placemaking Manager\, Plunkett UK\nStephen Rolph\, Head of Community Assets & Enterprise\, Locality

SUMMARY:Co-op Party Live - Policy: Saving Britain's Social Clubs
DESCRIPTION:Saving Britain’s Social Clubs\nFor so many towns and cities across the country\, social clubs have been the beating hearts of communities. They have been vital spaces for people to come together\, but have been under pressure for decades and\, with the impact of the pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis\, these community lifelines are fast declining. These are places where people congregate to enjoy shared activities and events and\, as such are generally run as either member-owned co-operatives or membership-based charities\, meaning they are run by the communities that they support. \nThe Co-operative Party is committed to do all we can to strengthen communities across the UK and give them the rights to protect these vital assets. Join us on Zoom as we discuss policy proposals that will work to recover and renew social clubs and expand the democratic economy. \nSpeakers include: \n\nJonathan Gordon Farleigh – Managing Director and Co-founder\, Stir to Action;\nNick Plumb – Director of Policy and Insight\, Power to Change;\nKirsty McNeill MP – Member of Parliament for Midlothian and Under-Secretary of State for Scotland.\n\n
