SUMMARY:Co-op Party Live - Policy: Saving Britain's Social Clubs
DESCRIPTION:Saving Britain’s Social Clubs\nFor so many towns and cities across the country\, social clubs have been the beating hearts of communities. They have been vital spaces for people to come together\, but have been under pressure for decades and\, with the impact of the pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis\, these community lifelines are fast declining. These are places where people congregate to enjoy shared activities and events and\, as such are generally run as either member-owned co-operatives or membership-based charities\, meaning they are run by the communities that they support. \nThe Co-operative Party is committed to do all we can to strengthen communities across the UK and give them the rights to protect these vital assets. Join us on Zoom as we discuss policy proposals that will work to recover and renew social clubs and expand the democratic economy. \nSpeakers include: \n\nJonathan Gordon Farleigh – Managing Director and Co-founder\, Stir to Action;\nNick Plumb – Director of Policy and Insight\, Power to Change;\nKirsty McNeill MP – Member of Parliament for Midlothian and Under-Secretary of State for Scotland.\n\n

SUMMARY:Co-op Party Live - Policy: A Recipe for Success?
DESCRIPTION:Co-op Party Live – Policy\nIn May 2023\, Barnardo’s and Co-op launched an ambitious partnership to bring local communities together to support the positive futures of 750\,000 10–25-year olds across the UK\, following research that found a third of young people do not feel positive about their future. \nYoung people growing up in poverty face a wide range of barriers with accessing food is part of this. They tell us that getting good\, nutritious food\, in the places and spaces that work for them is key to them getting on in life\, not only helping them grow and develop but also connecting them with other young people. \nJoin us on Zoom as we identify solutions that are present in existing community spaces and put recommendations to the UK Government\, local government and retailers that improve young people’s access to food in the community. With speakers including Cllr Jake Bonetta – Co-op Youth Advisory Group; Alistair Cooper – Lead on Child Poverty at Barnardo’s and Alison Scowen – Senior Campaigns and Public Affairs Manager at the Co-op

SUMMARY:Co-op Party Live - Policy: Unleashing Co-op Retrofit
DESCRIPTION:Co-op Party Live – Policy\nUnleashing Co-op Retrofit\nIn the current energy crisis\, we often hear about large-scale national policies and their direct impact on individual households. However\, an equally important focus lies at the community level\, where collective action can drive significant change. This is where energy communities come into play\, offering a unique approach to tackling energy inefficiency and high costs through retrofitting. \nAcross the UK there is a large demand for retrofit services as people and communities reduce their home carbon emissions in order to meet net-zero targets. \nJoin industry experts to find out how the Co-op Party is working with co-operative energy organisations on Labour’s Warm Homes Plan initiative to improve the energy efficiency of homes across the UK\, ensuring that households are better insulated and more resilient against rising energy costs. Speakers include \n\nJonathan Atkinson – Carbon Co-op\nHarriet Sansom – Centre for Sustainable Energy\nAfsheen Rashid – Repowering London\nCllr Sam Pallis – Hackney Borough Council\nChair – Dan Monaghan\, Co-operative Party Policy Officer

DESCRIPTION:Co-op Party Live – Policy\nLearning from International Co-operative Growth\nThe new Labour Government has made a historic commitment to doubling the size of the co-operative sector across the UK. \nTo achieve this objective\, we will have to learn from leading international examples of co-operative growth. SUMMARY:Co-op Party Women: Bystander Training to mark 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence
DESCRIPTION:16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence\nCo-op Party Women: Bystander Training\nWe can all be bystanders. Every day events unfold around us. At some point\, we will register someone in danger. When this happens\, we will decide to do or say something (and become an active bystander)\, or to simply let it go (and remain a passive bystander). \nWhen we intervene\, we signal to the perpetrator that their behaviour is unacceptable. If such messages are constantly reinforced within our community\, we can shift the boundaries of what is considered acceptable and problem behaviour can be stopped. \nLearning to recognise when someone is in danger and how you can intervene safely is an essential skill.  Members of the Co-operative Party Women’s Network are invited to join this session on Bystander Training by Julie from Freedom Personal Safety as she explains what we can do to disrupt harassment. \nThis event is supported by the Co-operative Party Women’s Network and is open to all members.

SUMMARY:Co-op Party Live: Delivering Community Ownership Locally

Whether it’s a pub\, shop\, music venues\, leisure centre or cinema – community ownership can provide spaces for community benefit and cohesion – providing vital goods\, services and leisure opportunities.\nThe Labour & Co-op Government’s commitment to introducing a new Community Right to Buy will help to expand the community owned sector. Speakers will discuss the role of local councils and councillors in supporting community ownership development. This will include supporting community groups to register assets of community value\, purchase them and then development them into community businesses. \nThe session aims to help members and Labour & Co-op councillors find out more about how they can use community ownership to shape their local economy\, town centre and high street.
