SUMMARY:Co-op Party Live: Policy – Co-op Growth
DESCRIPTION:Co-op Party Live: Policy\nCo-op Growth\nWe want to build a fairer\, greener\, more democratic economy by growing the number of co-ops in every sector. But this won’t happen by accident – we need to keep making the case for co-ops and their role in our economy.  Research shows that employee-owned firms have been far outstripping conventional businesses in a range of metrics: whether that’s productivity\, worker wages\, profitability\, or job security. At 2022 ’s Co-op Party Annual Conference in Leeds\, Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves pledged to double the size of the UK’s co-operative economy\, and set out plans for a national wealth fund to give the public a stake in investment. \nThe Co-op Party wants to build a fairer\, greener\, more democratic economy by growing the number of co-ops in every sector but this will only happen if we keep making the case for co-ops and their role in our economy. It’s not easy to set up a new business and the Co-operative Party’s focus this year is to influence a future Labour and Co-operative Government on how to provide the finance and tools to go about this.  To growing the co-op sector we need to: \n\nProvide local support – Every community should have access to practical advice and support on how to start and grow co-operative businesses.\nBreak down legal barriers – the law is written with more traditional\, privately-owned businesses in mind – which often creates unexpected challenges for co-ops. It can take minutes to start a limited company but months to start a co-operative: we need to break down the barriers and extra legislative hurdles that co-ops face\, in order to supercharge their growth.\nGive access to finance – those same barriers can make it difficult for co-ops to access finance: we need to make it easier for co-op start-ups to access the capital investment they need to thrive.\n\nJoin us on Zoom to hear more about our commitment to double the size of the co-operative sector. \nSpeakers include Andrew O’Brien (Demos)\, Glenn Bowen (Cwmpas – formerly Wales Co-op Centre) and Sarah Longlands (CLES).

SUMMARY:Policy: Community Energy
DESCRIPTION:Co-op Party Live: Policy\nCommunity Energy\nFor too long\, our energy has been produced and owned abroad – enriching oligarchs and multinational oil and gas companies. Meanwhile our bills have soared to record highs.  There has never been a more important moment to invest in cheap\, clean renewable energy produced and owned right here in the UK to give all of us a greater stake and say in our energy system and to help reduce our bills.   \nCommunity energy\, where local communities own and profit from renewable energy projects in their local area\, should be at the heart of this ambition and is already helping to power nearly 200\,000 homes across the country with clean\, green energy.  \nAt the Co-operative Party\, we believe community energy must be central to the transformative agenda for renewable energy. We cannot simply recreate the status quo which has left people with sky high bills and energy insecurity. Community energy provides the opportunity to empower people as renewable energy owners – with the ability to generate\, store and control their own clean energy.  That’s why we are delighted to see community energy form a key part of Labour’s mission to make Britain a clean energy superpower. \nThe future Labour & Co-operative Government will launch a new Local Power Plan that puts community energy at its heart. A new publicly-owned energy company\, GB Energy\, will be a key facilitator in growing the community energy sector – working with local communities and local authorities to build clean energy in villages\, towns and cities. New community energy initiatives will include onshore wind\, solar and hydro projects – which provide communities with the opportunity to own new renewable energy sources in their direct locality. The Local Power Plan will make available up to £600m in funding for local authorities and up to £400m low-interest loans each year for communities. \nAs long-term campaigners for community energy\, the Co-operative Party are delighted to see a commitment to providing record funding for community energy growth. Labour’s Local Power Plan will be by far the largest public investment into community energy in history – far surpassing the previous Rural Community Energy Fund which ended in spring 2022 and outstripping the Government’s recent announcement of a new Community Energy Fund due to open in early Autumn and committing £10m over two years in support of the community energy sector.     \nJoin us on Zoom to hear more.  Speakers include Michaela Cryar – Director of Younity; Afsheen Kabir Rashid MBE – Founder and CEO Repowering; Alistair Macpherson – Chief Executive Plymouth Community Energy and Cllr Eva Murray – Co-op Party. \n

SUMMARY:Policy: Retail Crime
DESCRIPTION:Co-op Party Live: Policy\nRetail Crime\nRetail crime is a scourge on our high streets which has a profound cost not just on retailers but the shopworkers who are too often forced to endure this criminality.  Throughout 2023 \, reports from across the retail sector demonstrate the extent to which this crisis is escalating\, with soaring rates of retail crime including shoplifting and the violence\, threats and abuse directed towards retail staff. Across the first six months of the year alone\, for instance\, Co-op reported 175\,000 recorded incidents\, representing around 1\,000 incidents a day and an increase of 35% from 2022. \nThroughout the country criminals have been given the freedom to loot\, with organised crime gangs often stealing to order and persistently repeating these offences in the same shops. What’s more\, these criminal acts often act as flashpoints for anti-social behaviour against retail staff who are subject to appalling levels of violence\, threats and abuse as they go about their jobs. \nThroughout last year\, the Co-operative Party worked with the trade union USDAW and co-operative retail societies to secure a vital policy commitment from the Labour Party to address this crisis and go further in protecting shop workers from threats\, violence and abuse they face at work. But without action from the current government\, there is still more we must do.  Last month\, our Party Chair Jim McMahon recently raised this in the House – see the clip here:  https://www.facebook.com/coopparty/videos/1316272052358168?locale=en_GB \nWe are delighted to share with Co-op Party members details of the pressure being put on the government to ensure these acts against shops workers are made a crime; more on the work of our elected Labour & Co-operative Police & Crime Commissioners and the policing pledges that Labour & Co-operative government will make Britain’s high streets safer. \nSpeakers include Dr Alan Billings – Police and Crime Commissioner for South Yorkshire; Emily Spurrell – Police & Crime Commissioner for Merseyside;  Paul Gerrard – Campaigns\, Public Affairs & Board Secretariat Director the Co-op; Emma Hoddinott – Assistant General Secretary Co-op Party and (tbc) Paddy Lillis\, General Secretary USDAW.

SUMMARY:Local Government: Warm Welcome Hubs
DESCRIPTION:Co-op Party Live – Local:\nWarm & Welcome community spaces\nThe ongoing cost of living crisis continues to hit communities hard with many people having to choose to turn off their heating for substantial times of the day or not to put the heating on at all.  Last winter\, the Co-operative Party worked with the charity Warm Welcome as they drove a collective movement to provide free\, warm\, welcoming and friendly spaces across the UK and offer everyone the access to a warm and welcoming space in their local community so they can connect with others\, make new friends\, and feel part of their community. \nThere are now over 7000 Warm Welcome Spaces across the UK which come in all shapes and sizes: community centres\, libraries\, churches\, community cafes\, arts centres\, local businesses\, and schools\, but there are still many communities who are not able to provide this.  ]\nWe are delighted that speakers David Barclay- Campaign Director\, Warm Welcome and Cllr Francesca Brennan – Inverclyde Council are able to join us to provide an update on how Labour & Co-operative councillors and Party members can register local community spaces in your own ward\, town or village and work towards Warm Welcome’s ambition to grow their network of spaces across every part of the UK\, so everyone can access warm and welcoming space. \nJoin us on Zoom to find out more.

SUMMARY:Co-operation Live Wales: Retail Crime
DESCRIPTION:Co-operation Live Wales: Retail Crime\nNobody should be afraid to go to work or to shop on their local high street. Yet soaring levels of retail crime have seen shopworkers face appalling levels of violence and abuse at work. To make matters worse\, stats show that 71% of serious retail crime in the UK is not responded to by police. \nThroughout Wales criminals have been given the freedom to loot\, with organised crime gangs often stealing to order and persistently repeating these offences in the same shops. What’s more\, these criminal acts often act as flashpoints for anti-social behaviour against retail staff who are subject to appalling levels of violence\, threats and abuse as they go about their jobs. \nThis behaviour is unacceptable\, and alongside the co-operative retail sector\, the Co-operative Party and the shopworkers’ union USDAW have long campaigned for more to be done to address this crisis. \nMembers of the Wales Co-operative Party are invited to join this online event with Andrew Dunbobbin\, Police and Crime Commissioner for North Wales as he discusses how Welsh Labour & Co-operative Police & Crime Commissioners are tackling this. Chaired by Jackie Jones\, Chair of the Wales Co-operative Party.
