SUMMARY:Co-operation Live: the need to address food poverty now
DESCRIPTION:The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs or Global Goals) are well-known and form part of our obligations to support developing countries. Less well-known is that they apply domestically. The second SDG is ‘zero hunger by 2030’.  Despite this obligation\, food poverty appears to be increasing not decreasing. The impact of the pandemic and the cost of living crisis means that over 8 million people in the UK have trouble putting food on their tables. Over 500\,000 people used food banks last year\, with over 1 million people living in food deserts. Plus the added long-term impact on health with 10% of the NHS budget treating diabetes. \nThis week’s start of the school year sees primary schools across London now providing free schools meals to all pupils but many are still missing out. Current data shows that one in three schoolchildren living in poverty in England does not qualify for free school meals. \nJoin us on Zoom as we hear from food justice campaigners committed to addressing and tackling these issues today. With: \n\nAlice McDonald -Campaign Director for Hungry for Action and PPC Norwich North\nStephanie Slater – CEO\, School Food Matters\, who teach children about food and improve their access to healthy\, sustainable food.\nTanya Noon – director of Kandoroo\, a CIC that provides a digital solution to food poverty\nChaired by Cllr Abigail Marshall-Katung\, Co-operative Party NEC Member (North) and Chair of Scrutiny Board (Infrastructure\, Investment and Inclusive Growth)\, Leeds City Council

DESCRIPTION:Summer School: Getting the most from your membership\nWe’re powered by the time and energy of our members\, who are based in communities right across the UK. \nSometimes though\, it’s not always the easiest to know how to get involved and what support we can give to help you along the way. \nAs one of the thousands of new members who’ve joined us in the last few years\, we want to invite you to take part in our Co-operative Party Online Summer School 2023. \nThis summer we’ll be doing a series of short Zoom calls with Party staff to help you find out more about who we are\, what we do and how to get active. You can also learn how we interact with the wider co-op movement and the Labour Party and how you could become a candidate.

SUMMARY:Co-op Live: Ethical Tax & Procurement
DESCRIPTION:Billions are missing from our public purse because some companies avoid paying corporation tax. Not only does this mean that less money is available for public services\, but that smaller local businesses can’t compete.  At every level of Government\, we want to tackle tax avoidance and promote businesses who pay their fair share – this starts locally. \nCollectively\, local authorities spend more than £40bn per year procuring goods and services our behalf. From cleaning to construction\, councils do business with hundreds of different suppliers. We are asking that Councils commit to signing the Councils for Fair Tax declaration which ensures they embed fair taxes into their procurement requirements and declares their support for the economic contribution this makes locally – so taxpayer money doesn’t go to businesses who avoid paying their fair share. \n#FairTaxWeek recognises organisations across the UK that pay tax responsibly and in 2023 will see these businesses and local authorities step forward and say what they pay with pride.  Right now\, Councils are leading by example\, by demanding greater transparency\, and promote local businesses who do pay their fair share and we want more to join them. \nJoin us on Zoom on Wednesday 14 June at 6pm as we explore topics such as from beneficial ownership disclosure or the need for public procurement reform. With speakers including Nóra Blascsók\, Communications Officer at the Fair Tax Foundation and Cllr Sue Morgan – Executive Member for Resources\, Torfaen Council
