SUMMARY:Co-operation Live - A Rural Review
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Co-operation Live where we will hear more from the commissioners involved in writing our recently launched Co-operative Party Rural Commission Report which aims to provide a blueprint for how an incoming Labour & Co-operative Government can tackle the challenges rural communities face and deliver for these communities.  Rural and coastal communities face a multitude of challenges\, which are often different from those faced by urban communities. Poor transport connectivity\, social isolation and lack of accessible services are some issues which are particularly prevalent in rural and coastal communities. \nThe Co-operative Party Rural Commission has sought to provide proposals which help to overcome these issues and is the culmination of a year-long consultation process\, which heard from hundreds of respondents across the country. Respondents provided evidence of significant challenges\, with a growing disconnect between urban and rural communities. The evidence demonstrated that rural and coastal communities often feel left out of decision making and resource allocation\, as an after thought to urban areas. \nHear from speakers including Chair of the Commission Lord Steve Bassam\, Commissioner Baroness Sue Hayman as well as Head of Policy and Communications at the Plunkett Foundation Chris Cowcher on how the values and principles of the co-operative movement can tackle some of the challenges many rural communities across the country face\, followed by a facilitated Q&A.

SUMMARY:Joan Maynard Memorial Lecture - Thirsk
DESCRIPTION:World Earthday chosen for lecture in memory of Labour firebrand. \nThirsk & Malton Labour Party have revived the tradition of organising a lecture in memory of Joan Maynard (1921 – 1998) who lived\, worked and died in the Thirsk area.  From the humble origins of a poor tenant farming family\, Joan Maynard became a towering figure in the Labour and Trades Union movement of her time. \nBecoming Vice President of the National Union of Agricultural Workers and Deputy Chair of the Labour Party\, Joan was elected as MP for Sheffield Brightside but never forgot her rural roots and returned to Thirsk after standing down from Parliament. She is credited with the abolition of the tied-cottage system. Far ahead of her time\, Joan campaigned on high welfare standards for livestock\, health and safety of farm workers and the dangers of organophosphates. \nShe believed ‘The earth is honest. It gives back to you what you put in.’ \nIt is fitting that the 2023 lecture to be given in her memory will be on World Earthday and by Noga Levy-Rapoport on ‘The Art of Campaigning – How to Fight for a Just & Sustainable Future’. \nNoga is a young climate activist\, organiser\, and speaker who led the school climate strikes across the UK and internationally.  Often called the UK’s Greta Thunberg\, Noga has worked on numerous campaigns pushing for education reform\, youth empowerment\, a Green New Deal and been involved with sustainability community projects including Gaia’s Garden and #SeaOurFuture. \nNamed as one of the most influential Londoners by the Evening Standard\, a Forbes Top 100 Environmentalist\, and a recipient of the 2021 Diana Award\, Noga should prove to be an excellent and stimulating speaker.  The lecture will touch on the climate strikes\, empowerment and the importance of defending the freedom to protest for the planet. \nJohn Gibbins\, local Political Education Officer for the Labour Party says ‘Protecting our environment is a big issue today\, but sometimes people don’t really know what to do. Sometimes we need to get away from our phones and screens and talk to people who are out there doing things. That’s what EarthDay is all about and it’s great that\, in Noga\, we have a young\, inspirational campaigner here in Thirsk. Just like Joan Maynard\, love or loathe the politics\, Noga is worth hearing.’ \nThe lecture is at Thirsk Town Hall\, 2.00 pm on Saturday 22 April. It is free and seats can be reserved by emailing to: secretary@thirskandmaltonlabour.uk. \nPrevious memorial lectures were given by Tony Benn\, Rodney Bickerstaffe\, Gerry Adams and Hilary Benn.

SUMMARY:World Earthday - Thirsk
DESCRIPTION:Major local event celebrates international World Earthday  \nThe world’s largest environmental movement has a major event in Thirsk this weekend. \nA fantastic range of local and regional groups are taking over Thirsk Town Hall on the morning of Saturday 22 April to showcase their work. \nOver 70 entries to the event’s Art Competition mean the judges have a tough task during the morning to select winners of the cash prizes generously donated by Zillah Bell gallery.  The results will be announced at noon. \nThe event is a great opportunity to meet the people working to preserve and enhance our environment. \nCharities and trusts will be there showing how they are: protecting rural England\, working to keep our rivers clean\, conserving vital woodlands\, creating a world were birdlife can thrive\, nurturing bees\, rescuing injured owls. \nPeople might be surprised to learn how the mighty Women’s Institute has been campaigning on the environment for over a century or how co-operatives are combating climate change. \nSo much of our quality of life is enhanced by volunteers like the Hambleton Strollers with guided health walks or the Thirsk Wombles who collected 28 bags of litter last weekend alone. \nThe international dimension of the link between what we buy and climate change will be explained by representatives of the Fair Trade movement. Thirsk Friends of the Earth will take up the climate change theme in a special presentation. \nDeer Shed Festival will show how ‘getting the little things right’ and focussing on quality has helped build a renowned family festival that helps boost the rural economy. \nCountry Markets are all about sustainability and self-sufficiency and will have plants for sale. \nThirsk Community Library might be the longest standing example of ‘Reduce\, Reuse and Recycle’. It will be promoting not only books but its amazing range of services as well as running craft sessions. \nThe Repair Cafe has joined forces with Earthday and the highly skilled volunteers will be in the annex fixing all sorts of household goods and sharpening tools\, for free or donations. \nPlus exhibitions\, talks\, arts and crafts for youngsters\, guided birdwatching walks\, quizzes. \nEveryone involved in the event is enthusiastic about the opportunity to promote their work. \nThe Campaign for the Protection of Rural England says: \n‘CPRE North and East Yorkshire are delighted to join with partner organisations in celebrating World Earth Day. There are so many pressures on our fragile ecosystem without the challenge of climate change. It is down to everyone to protect our world for future generations. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our glorious countryside with like minded partner organisations and get to discover some very local initiatives.’ \nCorinne Williams of the Northallerton\, Thirsk and District Beekeeping Association has been a beekeeper since 2015 and recently set up a small but expanding bee project. The ‘North Yorkshire Contented Bee Project’ (NYCBP) aims to educate people (especially farmers) about bees (all types) and other pollinators\, their habitats\, and importance to the environment and UK economy. \nMoney raised from sales of ‘NYCBP honey’ helps towards funding the project. \nCorinne says: \n‘Local bee colonies provide FREE pollination services to farmers and in 2021 bees and other pollinators contributed the equivalent of more than £500 million a year to UK agriculture and food production\, by improving crop quality and quantity\, and are vital to our wider\, natural ecosystems. I’m delighted to have this fantastic opportunity to show people how important bees are to life on earth.’ \nLindsay Gee from the Women’s Institute comments: \n‘North Yorkshire East Federation of WIs is delighted to be taking part in this event\, to help showcase the great range of environmental activities being carried out in our area. We expect the day to be both inspiring and enjoyable. The WI have been involved for a century in working for our countryside\, and against environmental degradation and climate change – including End Plastic Soup\, SOS for Honeybees\, and Great Big Green Weeks among current campaigns; and with a national resolution being voted on by members next month calling for clean rivers for people and wildlife. The World Earthday can only help this along.’ \n  \nThe event runs from 10.00 am to 1.00pm in Thirsk Town Hall \n  \nConfirmed exhibitors: \nCampaign for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) \nYorkshire Dales Rivers Trust (YDRT) \nWoodlands Trust \nRoyal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) \nNorthallerton\, Thirsk and District Beekeeping Association \nOwl & Birds of Prey Rescue Society (Rose Dawson) \nWomen’s Institute \nHambleton Strollers \nThirsk Wombles \nFair Trade \nThe Co-op \nThirsk Friends of the Earth \nDeer Shed Festival \nCountry Markets \nThirsk Community Library \nThe Repair Cafe \nHambleton Cloth Nappy Library \nNorth Yorkshire Rotters \nYorewaste \n  \nThe event includes a number of human interest stories\, particularly: \nRose Dawson whose family almost single-handedly runs the Owl Rescue Charity \nhttps://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8234959/amp/What-hoot-Meet-bird-loving-grandmother-69-shares-home-54-OWLS.html \nFor more information contact Anne Seex 07789 987445

SUMMARY:Co-operation Live - Unleashing co-operative growth
DESCRIPTION:The co-operative sector is an important contributor to the British economy\, providing good jobs and a stake for workers and members in a democratic model. While there are many famous co-operatives in the British economy\, our co-operative sector is smaller than comparable nations like France and the Netherlands. It is clear co-operatives can play a larger role in our economy\, helping to create better more prosperous local economies. \nJoin us for this week’s Co-operation Live where we will hear from representatives from the co-operative sector including Joe Fortune – Co-op Party General Secretary\, Rose Marley – CEO Co-ops UK and Glenn Bowen – Interim Chief Exeutive Cwmpas (formerly Wales Co-operative Development Agency) on why and how we can achieve greater co-operative growth.
