SUMMARY:LGBTQ+ Co-operators at UK Pride 2022
DESCRIPTION:LGBTQ+ Co-operators at UK Pride 2022\nThis year UK Pride is back! After an enforced hiatus due to the Covid-19 Pandemic we can once again come together to celebrate our LGBTQ+ community and demand the changes we need to ensure we can all live as our authentic selves. \nWith UK Pride marking 50 years it’s sure to be a great celebration of the progress we have made in demanding our rights\, as well as a chance to raise our voices to defend them from those who would take them away from us. \nAnd with the recent Conservative Party leadership contest descending into transphobia it is vital that we stand shoulder to shoulder with our Trans+ siblings and march for their rights and against bigotry. \nSo\, join us on Saturday 23rd July! We will be meeting from 11.30am outside the Newcastle Civic Centre ready for the march to begin shortly after! \nLet us know if you’re coming!

SUMMARY:Councillors' Call: fairer tax in 2022
DESCRIPTION:Do you know where your council’s money is being spent? Billions are missing from our public purse because some companies avoid paying corporation tax\, and local government money could be supporting that. \nAt every level of Government\, we need to tackle tax avoidance and promote businesses who pay their fair share – starting in your local area. There is much councils can do to back fair tax in their own area\, from demanding greater transparency to promoting local businesses who do pay their fair share. \n20 Councils have now signed the Councils for Fair Tax Declaration [https://fairtaxmark.net/supporters/councils-for-fair-tax/]\, committing them to leading by example in their own tax conduct and also campaigning for greater powers to take fair tax into account during procurement. If you haven’t already joined them then now is your chance! \nWe will be holding a quick online lunchtime briefing on Thursday 19th May at 12:30pm\, where you can find out how to take action as a Co-operative Councillor. Make sure you sign up to take part \n

SUMMARY:North of England Regional Conference: Building Community Power
DESCRIPTION:BUILDING COMMUNITY POWER \nA Co-operative Party Regional Conference \nfor the North of England\nIn 2022\, due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic\, the Co-operative Party is once again holding a series of virtual Conferences across all regions and nations of the UK.  Members and supporters from across the North of England are invited to take part in this online Zoom event on Saturday 26 March from 2pm to 5pm. \nThe pandemic has shown that we respond to crisis with kindness – shown in the hundreds of mutual aid groups that have established\, in the way that community and co-operative businesses have stepped up to support those in need\, and in the way that people made huge sacrifices to limit the spread of the virus. As we rebuild from Covid-19\, we want to look at how we ensure this co-operation can live on. \nThe theme for this Conference is Building Community Power – how we can strengthen community wellbeing and resilience by examining how communities themselves can make a difference.  By empowering our communities we can actively involve them in the decisions that affect their lives. SUMMARY:Co-operation Live – the Economic Crime Bill & Register of Overseas Entities
DESCRIPTION:Co-operation Live:\nThe Economic Crime Bill & Register of Overseas Entities\nWednesday 23 March at 6.00pm on Zoom\nFor too long\, offshore companies have been able to buy up property in the UK without revealing their true owners – hollowing out communities and masking potential corruption.  The Economic Crime Bill is an important step in addressing the scourge of overseas tax evaders\, money launderers and criminals using the UK as a base for their economic crimes and one that\, given the devastating circumstances in Ukrine\, is sadly more important than ever. \nThis Zoom event will address the impact of the changes to the Register of Overseas Entities and how it will help unmask the real beneficiaries of ownership in the UK\, providing critical ownership transparency\, and could help fill the vacant buildings on our high streets\, hold landlords and investors to account\, and ensure a level playing field for UK businesses.  We call for the Government to close the loophole remaining in this legislation which allows overseas owners up to 6 months to comply with the new regulations\, giving oligarchs and criminals more than enough time to sell-up or find new ways of hiding their assets. \nSpeakers include Paul Monaghan\, Chief Executive of the Fair Tax Foundation and Seema Malhotra MP\, Shadow Minister for Business  Energy and Industrial Strategy \nThis online event is live captioned for greater accessibility.
