Co‑ops are owned by their members, not distant shareholders. They put economic power directly in the hands of local people and ensure the benefits of economic growth are felt by those who create it. Our ambition is to double the size of the UK co‑operative sector: creating good jobs, increasing productivity and generating economic growth from the ground up.
One of the first steps GB energy will take is to make a record investment in community-owned energy. GB Energy will work with councils, co-operatives and communities to set up hundreds of new community-owned renewable energy projects set up across the UK. This will create one million new owners of energy and directly provide power and profit for local communities.
We will bring in a Community Right to Buy. That means if a community asset like a pub, community centre or music venue is put up for sale, the community will be given the chance to buy it first. Instead of being sold-off to developers or investors, our local assets should be community-owned and community-run.
Hundreds of shopworkers are abused and assaulted every day, just for doing their jobs. Our high streets should be a safe place to work and shop, but this problem is only getting worse. A Labour & Co-operative Government will bring in a new standalone offence to give shopworkers the legal protection they deserve, and give police the resources they keep to keep our communities safe.
