Every community has places that make them special. Whether it’s a pub, a leisure centre, or a rugby club, these places are absolutely central to what make our areas what they are, what we love about our communities, and even our sense of identity. They are the backdrop to our lives – and they really matter.
But after 14 years of economic vandalism under the Tories we’ve all seen these kinds of places lost forever – the local pub bought up and converted into luxury flats, the local rugby club gutted and forced to sell off their ground, the local high street blighted by vacant and vandalised shops.
We think there is a solution: a Community Right to Buy. This would protect community assets by giving local communities a right of first refusal to buy assets when they come up for sale, keeping them in local hands.
That’s why Scotland has already got one – and community ownership has grown faster there than anywhere else in the UK since the Community Empowerment Act.
That’s why England is getting one – the UK Government announced it would be creating a Community Right to Buy in England as part of the English Devolution White Paper.
And that’s why Wales needs one too.
That's why we're starting a new campaign to call on the Welsh Government to commit to creating a Community Right to Buy for Wales. Add your name to back the campaign now.
