Ask your MSPs to stand up for the Right to Food

Labour & Co-operative MSP Rhoda Grant has been campaigning to enshrine the Right to Food into Scots Law.

The Right to Food goes back to the very roots of the co-operative movement. From the very beginning, our movement has believed that everyone should have access to good quality, nutritious food. Now, as then, we’re taking action to make that a reality.

In 2024, it’s appalling that there are people in Scotland going hungry. That why we’re asking you to write to your MSP, and ask them to make it a legal requirement that food be accessible, financially and geographically, to everyone in Scotland.

I am writing to you as one of your constituents. I am asking you to support the Bill which has been submitted by Rhoda Grant MSP, the Right to Food (Scotland) Bill. It is a disgrace that in 2024 in Scotland there are people who are struggling to feed their families. The most recent statistics from the Trussell Trust show that in the first half of 2023/24 they distributed nearly 130,000 [128,490] food parcels in Scotland. The Trussell Trust’s statistics reflect only the food parcel’s distributed from their network and therefore the number of food parcels distributed in Scotland is far higher than this. The Bill proposed by Rhoda Grant MSP seeks to enshrine the right to food in Scots law. The proposed Bill would seek to place duties on the Scottish Government to ensure that, now and in the future, food is accessible to people – financially and geographically – and that food is adequate in terms of nutrition, safety and cultural appropriateness. As you know this Bill requires cross-party support to go forward in the Scottish Parliament. I hope that you will sign the Bill and ensure that the case to end Food Poverty in Scotland is heard in the Scottish Parliament.
