Ask your MSPs to back the Ecocide Bill

Scottish Co-operative Party MSP Monica Lennon is promoting a Member’s Bill, Ecocide (Prevention) (Scotland) Bill, which will have its Stage 1 debate in the Scottish Parliament on Thursday 5 February 2026.

The Bill aims to:

  • Make harming the environment a serious offence through introducing a crime of ecocide.
  • Deter harm through tough sanctions, including prison sentences.
  • Ensure Scotland keeps pace with ecocide law developments in Europe and internationally.

The consultation on this Bill demonstrated overwhelming support for an ecocide law – 95% of responses were in favour of introducing a crime of ecocide.

The Parliament’s Net Zero, Energy and Transport Committee recognised that our current system lacks a clear “apex” environmental offence, one that treats intentional or reckless devastation of our environment as a crime of exceptional gravity. The Stage 1 report also highlighted the Bill’s powerful deterrent and signalling value: even if prosecutions are rare, criminalising ecocide sends a clear message that Scotland puts people and planet before illegal profit.

As the Bill will fall if it does not receive support at Stage 1, we are urging MSPs to look to protect our environment and allow this Bill to progress to the next parliamentary stage where amendments can be made.

If you agree that ecocide should be a crime, ask your MSPs to back the bill.
