Given the current crisis of household bills and pending recession, we believe that food insecurity should be included as an indicator that measures the well-being of the nation.
In the previous consultation, consultees identified some 16 new indicators (or themes for new indicators) which they considered should be included within the Wales Future Generation full list. The most commonly cited covered the themes of: Food poverty, Fuel poverty, Violence or abuse.
At present, neither the milestones nor the indicators which go towards the milestones feature any measure of food insecurity.
There are well-established methods of measuring food insecurity, the most commonly used one is from the US, based on the USDA Household Food Security Survey Module.
The Co-op Party has been campaigning on the issue of food justice, and it is clear that different responses are required to address different issues. By including food insecurity, the Government can understand the extent and patterns of food insecurity, and therefore can more effectively respond to that.
