Protect and expand our mutual sector

Last year, private equity giant Bain Capital tried to buy up one of Britain’s oldest customer-owned mutuals, LV= (Liverpool Victoria).

But we fought back. Together with others in the co-operative movement, we campaigned to safeguard a business that works in the interests of its customers, not distant shareholders. Bain Capital lost – and we won.

LV= is safe from demutualisation for now, but it’s clear that mutual institutions like LV= are increasingly under threat from predatory venture capitalists. We need to pass new legislation to safeguard our co-operative and mutual legacy for future generations.

That's not all. We need to go further than just conserving our historic mutuals – we need to level the playing field and help unleash the next generation of co-operatives and mutuals too.

We need everyone in our movement to be part of this fight. Add your name now to join us, and we'll keep you updated with the next steps out our campaign to protect and expand our mutual sector.
