Protect our public spaces

Before the Coronavirus crisis, spaces vital to our communities like parks and post offices were already being sold-off and falling out of public use at an extraordinary rate. Lockdown demonstrated just how much communities value and rely on spaces like parks they were able to continue to use, and places like pubs that they weren't.

With the economic outlook now uncertain, especially for spaces like community centres and pubs, it’s never been more important for communities to be able to protect and own the spaces and places we love.

That's why as part of our "Love It? List It!" campaign, we're encouraging people to take the first step in protecting public spaces by legally listing them as an "Asset of Community Value".

However we also don't think the current law – which gives communities six months to raise the money to buy the asset themselves with the owner wants to sell it – goes far enough, especially in the current circumstances. So we're encouraging the Government to give communities more powers and support to protect and eventually own the local places that bind them together – including a Community Right to Buy, increased funding, and a longer window to place a bid.

Do you agree? Add your name now to call on the Government to give communities the power to fully protect and own our public spaces.
