Restore funding to fight modern slavery in the UK

Modern Slavery is one of the great evils of our time and it’s happening under our noses. In nail bars, car washes, farms, factories and restaurants, it is estimated that tens of thousands of people in the UK could be victims.

The co-operative movement has long fought to end modern slavery: we supported the introduction of the Modern Slavery Act and have helped local authorities to go further in eradicating it with our Modern Slavery Charter.

This year, the newly appointed anti-slavery commissioner – who the Government finally appointed after leaving the role empty for over a year   – announced that her funding had been cut this year despite cases being on the rise.

Now is not the time to be cutting funding for such a vital causes, and so we are calling on the Government to reverse these budget cuts and restore funding to fight modern slavery.
