Claire McCarthy Former General Secretary 24th November 2013 Blog Share Tweet For over 150 years the co-operative movement has been working for a fairer society; championing the rights of consumers, building stronger communities and offering an alternative way of doing business which puts people not shareholders first. For the last century the Co-operative Party has been proudly representing the movement in Parliament, championing the values and vision of co-operation. The Party and the movement have been through tough times before and gone on to achieve great success, working together. As a result, co-operative energy offers an alternative to the Big 6; credit unions offer an alternative to pay day lenders; and co-operative schools offer an alternative to large unaccountable academy chains. The Co-operative Party is proud that the Co-operative Group decided overwhelmingly, just two weeks ago at their Half Yearly Meeting, to continue their long tradition of supporting the work that the Co-operative Party and the movement do together.
