Richard McCready Political Officer (Scotland) 15th May 2024 Blog the Scottish Co-operative Party Share Tweet The Trussell Trust have today revealed that last year in Scotland they distributed 262,400 emergency food parcels through their network. These figures only reflect the work of the Trussell Trust and do not include figures from independent food banks. The work of food banks is really important and the many volunteers who staff them do a fantastic job but it is a disgrace that food banks exist in the a rich country like Scotland in 2024. We have been campaigning in support of Rhoda Grant MSP’s proposals to enshrine the Right to Food in Scots Law. We are calling on MSPs to support this Bill when comes before the Scottish Parliament later this year. We were pleased to see Scottish Co-operative Party MSP, Paul O’Kane, who is also Scottish Labour’s Social Justice spokesperson say that, ‘Scottish Labour and the Scottish Co-operative Party are committed to enshrining a legal right to food in Scots law.’ As the figures from the Trussell Trust only show the help which they have given we can say that there are at least 262,400 reasons to call for the Right to Food in Scots Law.
