Decisions made today will shape the lives of generations to come. That is why I have introduced the Wellbeing and Sustainable Development (Scotland) Bill: to ensure that policy-makers place the long-term interests of people and the planet at the centre of decision-making.

The Bill creates a new public duty requiring all public bodies to consider how their actions promote both wellbeing and sustainable development. It also provides clear statutory definitions of “wellbeing” and “sustainable development” so these terms are consistently applied in law and policy. Finally, the Bill establishes a Future Generations Commissioner for Scotland, tasked with holding public bodies to account and championing the interests of those who come after us.

This approach is already working in Wales, where similar legislation has guided decision-makers to plan for the long term. In Scotland, the Government has previously promised action on this issue but has not delivered. My Bill ensures that those promises are finally turned into reality.

I need your support to make this happen. Please show your backing for the Bill here: party.coop/protectthefuture

The Scottish Parliament’s Social Justice and Social Security Committee is currently carrying out a consultation on Stage 1 of the Bill and the closing date for submission is 24 August 2025. I encourage you to take part in this consultation and let MSPs know that you believe Scotland must act now:

Together, we can ensure Scotland protects the future, for all of us and for all the generations yet to come.
