Jennifer Hemingway Equalities Officer 6th February 2026 Blog Share Tweet Here are two contributions from women who have taken part in the Chris Herries scheme. If you feel inspired by their pieces, please do consider applying by registering here. This programme is empowering. I cannot recommend it highly enough. The content is carefully considered, detailed and congruent will the principles of co-operation and feminism. It is educational and inspiring. Despite a lifetime in the Labour and Co-operative movement, I learned so much. The tutors are superb, encouraging solidarity in the group, whilst educating us in a vibrant way about the courageous women who sacrificed so much to lay the foundations of the Labour and Co-operative movement. They translated this powerfully into how we can be more effective as women leaders today. It left me feeling that I was part of the rich history of Labour women and more informed than ever about the importance of co-operation. The graduation day was fantastic. We heard from the great Baroness Anderson and bonded with our fellow students and tutors. I felt valued, invigorated, inspired and part of something great. – Susan Bookbinder When I joined the Chris Herries Programme, I did not know what to expect as my confidence level was low. I did not want to talk or contribute as I thought my accent would be difficult to understand. The content was so engaging, impactful and inspiring as the trainers were amazing. I felt I belonged as everyone had different stories and experiences which we shared freely. The sisterhood was great to behold as we came to realise being vulnerable does not make us weak but actually strengthens us. The videos we watched and learning about inspirational women both past and present, who changed the status quo was the highlight for me. The co-operative values and principles of community cohesion, fairness and empowering society boosted my desire to give back more to my society. To crown it all, I have been selected as a Labour and Co-operative candidate for the coming local election. This is testament to the great impact the Chris Herries Leadership programme has had on my confidence and exposure. I will highly recommend this programme to any woman who wants to be empowered and has a passion to effect change. Thank you to the trainers, staff and those behind the scenes for giving women the chance to be great role models in the society and have a voice. It is great legacy in memory of Chris Herries. – Joanna Quaye
