Co-op Party Live:

Delivering Community Ownership Locally

Community ownership has helped save and maintain local assets of community value across the country – in cities, towns and villages. Whether it’s a pub, shop, music venues, leisure centre or cinema – community ownership can provide spaces for community benefit and cohesion – providing vital goods, services and leisure opportunities.

The Labour & Co-op Government’s commitment to introducing a new Community Right to Buy will help to expand the community owned sector. This session will focus on how local communities and local councils can deliver community ownership at a local level – increasing the number of community owned businesses and assets.

We will hear how community ownership can save much loved civic institutions and assets – particularly in local authorities experiencing financial challenges. Speakers will discuss the role of local councils and councillors in supporting community ownership development. This will include supporting community groups to register assets of community value, purchase them and then development them into community businesses.

The session aims to help members and Labour & Co-op councillors find out more about how they can use community ownership to shape their local economy, town centre and high street.
