How we’re promoting co-operative values in Hackney

As a Labour and Co-operative Mayor, I am proud that we have a budget which has committed nearly £70k into delivering our manifesto pledge of supporting the creation of co-operatives to deliver services where there is market failure and there isn’t a robust business case for insourcing. This includes areas such as social care, affordable child care, and community energy.

It’s time to unleash the power of co-operatives and mutuals.

With the right support, co-operative financial firms have the potential to provide new ideas and solutions to many of the crises and challenges we face as a country, such as the cost-of-living crisis or adapting to climate change. That’s why Labour has committed to doubling the size of the co-operative and mutual sector when in government.

Councillors voice their concern over the Home Secretary’s inaction

Over one hundred councils in England and Scotland signed up to the Charter Against Modern Slavery. Outraged by the failure of appoint the Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner, councillors from the councils that have embedded the Charter into their work have written to the Home Secretary.

A force for good.

A third of all government spending goes on procurement. That's why working alongside the Co-operative Party, I’m seeking to ensure we properly drive the power of procurement to support the public, get the best value for money, and drive-up standards through unleashing co-operatives.

An alternative future.

The Labour Party has previously committed to work with our movement to double the size of the co-operative sector, and I am keen to see this supported again. Of course, my aim is to become the first Co-operative Party Business Secretary and the most co-operatively minded holder ever of that post.
