Community Britain: Midlands

Join us in Leicester on Saturday 30 May for a day dedicated to the ideas, experiences and people shaping our region.

Get ready for an energetic and forward-thinking day where co-operators, activists and leaders come together to celebrate progress, share ideas and plan the future of Community Britain. If you haven’t attended one of our events before, this is a great first event to join — whether you’re one of our newer members, a long standing member or simply interested in our work.

Programme

Morning: Welcome, stories & local impact

The day opens with a warm civic welcome from Elly Cutkelvin, Deputy Mayor of Leicester City Council, setting the tone for collaboration and community pride.

We’ll then dive into Community Britain, featuring powerful stories and perspectives from Gareth Snell MP, Cllr Elly Cutkelvin, Kathy Hopkin (Save Birmingham) and others, exploring how co-operation is making a real difference on the ground.

The morning continues with:

  • Discover the inspiring work of the Co-operative Party’s five Equality Networks: BAME | (dis)Ability | LGBTQ+ | Women | Youth. Learn how these networks are championing representation, fairness and opportunity for all.
  • A local update from Tanya Noon on the progress and priorities of OurCo-op

Afternoon: From ideas to action

The afternoon shifts toward national policy, future planning and hands-on workshops. Hear directly from government voices:

  • Alex Norris MP, Minister of State (Home Office), on highlighting how co-operative priorities are being delivered in government.
  • Mike Reader MP, presenting the Local Power Plan and what it means for communities

Then roll up your sleeves in interactive sessions:

  • A Practical Action workshop tackling today’s political narrative and strengthening Community Britain
  • A Policy Consultation workshop shaping the 2026 consultation on Local Government and International Development

This promises to be a lively, forward-thinking day full of insight, discussion and opportunity. Come along, connect with fellow members, share your perspective, and help shape the future of Community Britain in the Midlands.

A recent member survey highlighted a clear desire for more local activity — and this event has been designed with that in mind. Working with local Party Council officers, we’ve built a programme that reflects what matters most to you and your region. This is your opportunity to help shape the conversation and ensure the priorities of your community are heard.

Tickets are £15 and include a buffet lunch and refreshments.
