For too long, offshore companies have been able to buy up property in the UK without revealing their true owners – hollowing out communities and masking potential corruption. The Economic Crime Bill is an important step in addressing the scourge of overseas tax evaders, money launderers and criminals using the UK as a base for their economic crimes and one that, given the devastating circumstances in Ukrine, is sadly more important than ever.
This Zoom event will address the impact of the changes to the Register of Overseas Entities and how it will help unmask the real beneficiaries of ownership in the UK, providing critical ownership transparency, and could help fill the vacant buildings on our high streets, hold landlords and investors to account, and ensure a level playing field for UK businesses. We call for the Government to close the loophole remaining in this legislation which allows overseas owners up to 6 months to comply with the new regulations, giving oligarchs and criminals more than enough time to sell-up or find new ways of hiding their assets.
Speakers include Paul Monaghan, Chief Executive of the Fair Tax Foundation and Seema Malhotra MP, Shadow Minister for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy
