World Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to honour refugees around the globe. It falls each year on June 20 and celebrates the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution. The Co-operative Party is proudly internationalist and believes that they are, people forced to flee should be treated with dignity and have a right to be protected. Whatever the threat – war, violence, persecution – everyone deserves and can seek protection, regardless of who they are or what they believe. It is non-negotiable: seeking safety is a human right.
With the impact of those seeking refuge from the war in Ukraine, the effects of current government policy in Syria, Afghanistan as well as of repatriation to Rwanda, the Co-operative Party invites its members to take part in this zoom event on Wednesday 22 June at 6pm as we highlight the need to build empathy and understanding for the plight of refugees and to recognize their resilience in rebuilding their lives.
With guest speakers including Enver Solomon – Chief Executive of the Refugee Council; Kate Osamor MP – member of the Parliamentary International Development Committee; Jane Hutt MS – the Welsh Government’s Minister for Social Justice; and Cllr Alice Mpofu-Coles – City of Sanctuary Ambassador and volunteer at Reading Refugee Support Group
This event will be live captioned for greater accessibility.
