Welcome to the 2017 Co-chair Elections. You can read the candidates’ statements before casting your vote at the end of this page. As at least one Co-chair position must be a women and we have only received nominations from men members, only one position will be elected in this election with nominations re-opened for the second position using an All Women Shortlist. If you have questions about the election process, please contact youth@party.coop Danny FILER (read statement) Candidate Statement: I wish to put myself forward for Co-Chair of our Cooperative Youth committee, because with the election of our new committee I hope that I might help ensure that our cooperative principles and aims are furthered and that we might provide for our membership with a youth wing that’s active and engaging across the UK. My experience within Labour I believe lends to the role; I have and am continuing to chair the Labour society at UCL where I have overseen the revival of the club after a period of inactivity – ensuring a broad, engaging society that’s promoting Labour values and involvement. I have seen the organisation of the London region, with 12+ politically diverse Labour clubs coordinating and working together to campaign and promote Labour in a way that has not been seen before. I am continuing to develop the region in my role as Regional Coordinator for Labour Students this year, which will hopefully be the most active yet. While previously our youth wing has been inactive, with our elections we have a great opportunity this year to ensure we take full advantage of the support the Co-op Party is willing to give us and put our principles on the agenda. With the Labour Party closer to power than has been the case for some time, and the election of the most Coop MPs ever in our history, we must be ensuring cooperative solutions are heard, that Coop Cllrs are elected in May, and our membership continues to grow. Thank you for your consideration! Jeevan JONES (read statement) Candidate Statement: I’ve always believed that Co-op Party Youth has a unique role to shape our politics, by enthusing young people to join us, our movement, by encouraging our members to change the culture of co-op societies, and ultimately our country by campaigning for a Co-op and Labour government. As co-chair I’ll work to develop our party, supporting you to organise events in your region as well as helping bring us together for national events and campaigns. I’ll influence our sister party’s youth structures and work with our NEC rep to make sure the Co-op Party is welcoming for young members at all levels. I have a record of getting things done. A party member for five years, I’ve been active in my Party Council and the West Midlands Regional Party. In our sister party I’ve served on the National Committees of Young Labour and Labour Students, and was Vice Chair of Birmingham Labour Students. I’ve chaired meetings and events and will ensure our committee meetings are engaging, orderly and inclusive. To build on our strengths and grow our organisation we need co-chairs with experience and determination. With your support I hope to be a co-chair that enables us to achieve our common goals together. Stephen STANNERS (read statement) Candidate Statement: I am a very proud and passionate COOP Party member and since joining our movement have worked extremely hard on the big issues that impact young members, most recently in my role on the National COOP Party youth committee representing the North East and North Cumbria region. I have been an active member involved in the different parts of our party for many years including my local branch, regional party council, and for the last two years the National Youth Committee. I was also very pleased in 2015 to become the youngest ever parish councillor for my home town, a role where I have been able to further promote the COOP movement. During my time on the committee over the last two years I have worked with other youth reps and the NEC to organise events up and down the country, most recently being the lead for a campaign weekend in the North East, where young members from across the Country came together to campaign for young Labour and COOP candidates which was hugely successful. I have lots of transferable skills and a good working knowledge of our party and movement which I will utilise if elected as co-chair. I hope you will give me the opportunity to become your co-chair and look forward to working alongside each and every one of you over the next two years. Contents
