Policy Hub – Co-operative Party

Policy Hub

The Co-operative Party’s 2017 policy consultation has now launched. You can use this page to learn more about the Party’s current policy via our summary documents, and make a submission online.

How to get involved
  • Download and read the policy consultation papers on Housing and Education – the discussion questions in the introductions of both documents provide a good starting point.

Then

  • Make your views heard by attending a policy discussion in your local party on either one or both of the documents – or organise one yourself.
Contact your branch secretary or membership@party.coop to find out what’s planned for your area.
  • You may also make a submission as an individual. You can either email policy@party.coop with your ideas, or make a submission online

The deadline for submissions from individuals, branches and local parties is Monday 31st July

Background

Between 2013-15 we conducted a full review of Party policy. The outcome of this process was a series of 12 policy papers which were passed at Party Conference in 2013 and 2014. These 12 policy papers form the basis of our Agenda for Britain, the Party’s platform for the 2015 General Election, and for our platforms in Scottish, Welsh, London and local government elections.

The 2016 process built on these documents via a further four summary documents. Responses considered how this policy platform might be updated, provided campaign ideas, and highlighted policy areas for further development.

The 2017 policy process

While the 2016 process considered the whole policy platform agreed prior to the last General Election, the 2017 process will focus on two in-depth specific areas of policy.

These areas were chosen due to the high number of responses in these areas during the 2016 process, and as they represent strategically important areas of policy development for the party.

Getting involved

In the run up to Conference 2017 in London, the NEC wants to ensure that individual members, local parties and co-operatives have the opportunity to help shape, develop and communicate the policies of the Party. Submissions are encouraged before Friday 30th of July.

What happens then?

  • After the deadline, all submissions will be considered by the Policy Subcommittee of the NEC and a report outlining their responses will be published prior to the Party’s annual conference in October.
  • The submissions and Policy Subcommittee responses will then form the basis of policy debates at annual conference
