Dennis served as Labour Co-operative MP for Wolverhampton South East between 1987 and 2005, including two years as Chair of the Co-operative Party Parliamentary Group, and as a parliamentary private secretary and opposition whip.

Lord Bilston was a committed co-operator throughout his life, and described as a ‘great son’ of Wolverhampton and the constituency he served. Following the closure of the steel works there in 1980, Dennis headed a committee of former steel workers to take on the running of Springvale Sports and Social Club, forming a co-operative. Together they saved a vital asset that continues to serve the community; a lasting legacy of his commitment to people of the area.

Lord Davies of Coity, friend and colleague of Lord Bilston said,

“I never knew the main to make an enemy in his life – a nice man and a good co-operator.”

Labour leader Ed Miliband paid tribute, tweeting:

“Very sad to hear about the passing of Dennis Turner. He dedicated his life to public service and the people of Wolverhampton & Bilston”

Our thoughts and best wishes are with Dennis Turner’s family at this difficult time.
