There are 20 members of the NEC:

• 1 for each for Scotland & Northern Ireland (combined),Wales and the 9 English Regions. These are elected by one member one vote by individual members in that nation or region.

In the East, Scotland & NI, London, Wales, West Midlands & Yorkshire & Humberside Regions only one candidate was nominated.  These have therefore elected unopposed so if you live in any of these regions you won’t receive a ballot paper for this section.

• 1 Youth member, elected by one member on vote of members under 30.

If you are a member under 30 in the East Midlands, North East, North West, South East or South West you will receive two votes – one to elect the regional representative and one for the youth representative.

• 2 representatives from the Co-operative Group. These are nominated by the Co-operative Group in accordance with their own procedures.  Currently, the Group is holding an election to select one representative from members of the National Members Council.

• 2 representatives of the other affiliated Societies and Organisations. The affiliated societies and organisation nominate and vote for one man and one woman.

• 2 members of the Co-operative Parliamentary Group in Westminster, plus one co-opted from the Group in the House of Lords. These are chosen by the Co-operative Party’s MPs.

• 1 member nominated by Co-operatives UK, if they choose to.

The new members will take office at the NEC’s AGM on 11 June 2017 and serve until after the next election in 2020, if they remain eligible.

For the eleven national/ regional seats, all individual members vote to elect the member for that region, unless there was only one candidate nominated.

For the Youth Representative, this is by individual members under 30.

To be eligible to vote, you must be a current member and have paid your subscriptions in full for 2016.  The ‘freeze date’ for new members was 9 September.  This means that if you joined in July or August 2016 you may not have been accepted as a full member in time to be eligible.  If you are not sure if you should be entitled to a vote, please contact us and we will check for you.

Societies and affiliates will elect their two representatives.

The election is being managed by ERS and they will send you instructions to vote on-line.  If you don’t receive these please check your spam folder carefully before you contact us.

If we don’t have your email address, or you don’t have one, you will receive your voting information in the post.  However, you will still be able to vote on-line – please do so if you can as this saves the Party money.

Voting information will be dispatched from 7 April.  You can vote as soon as you receive it.

The ballot closes at noon on 2 May, so make sure you cast your vote in plenty of time.
