It’s time to reform our leasehold system.

The recent Labour Party conference has confirmed the Party’s policy of replacing the leasehold system by making the commonhold form of freehold title the default tenure.  The 5 million leaseholders who live in England and Wales , often in marginal constituencies , will welcome such a proposal. Virtually all the English-speaking world has done away with the leasehold system.

Call for action on Retail Crime

Urgent action is needed to protect shopworkers in Scotland. Along with Daniel Johnson MSP, the Scottish Co-operative Party has signed a letter to the new Chief Constable of Police Scotland calling for action to protect retail workers. We want to make sure that the powers achieved through Daniel Johnson's Protection of Workers Act are used to protect retail workers in Scotland.

No one should face violence at work – but for many, it’s simply become just part of the job.

In Two Cities and Westminster, we’re proud to be home to one of the world’s most iconic shopping destinations. Places like Oxford Street, Regent Street and Carnaby Street have become go-to places for many people when visiting London. However, for too many of our shopworkers working in our constituency’s many retail stores, they’re now facing a daily routine of threats, abuse and violence.

The Labour vision for community power that we have outlined in the paper published this week will feel like home to many Co-op members and activists. It codifies what we know and have advocated for – for local communities to be heard and heeded in the places where decisions are taken and laws are made.
