Campaign Guide: Retail Crime – Co-operative Party

Campaign Guide:
Retail Crime

Retail crime continues to be a rising issue across the UK and at the Co-operative Party we’ve been working with organisations such as the Co-op Group and USDAW union to tackle retail crime whilst campaigning to strengthen protections for shop workers, support calls for additional policing resources and urging Police and Crime Commissioners to include retail crime in their police and crime plans.

We’ve pulled together a pack to give you the resources and materials to take the campaign to your local high street – whether it’s holding a street stall, contacting your local elected members or sharing our asks across social media.

Run a street stall

Run a street stall

A street stall is a perfect way to get out in your local community to speak to people about the Co-operative Party’s plan and bring together Co-operative Party members and supporters.

You can purchase materials like our brand new Safer High Streets leaflets and other campaigns essentials from our online store.

We’ve created a handy guide full of tips on how to run a successful street stall here.

As part of our Retail Crime campaign pack we’ve provided draft motions for you to take to your Co-operative Branch or Constituency Labour Party meetings, supporting the aims of the campaign and – with Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) elections coming up – urging PPCs to prioritise tackling retail crime by including the issue in their police and crime plans.

You can also write directly to your PPC candidate in the local elections using this draft letter.

Make your campaign checklist

Make your campaign checklist

We always recommend having a campaign checklist!

  • The aim, or the overall goal, and the objectives of the campaign, or the stepping stones that you will use to get there.
  • The allies you would like to back your campaign. For example, local shop workers or people who use them on a regular basis.
  • Key messages that will persuade those audiences – keep them short and punchy, and vary them by audience. It can be useful to choose three key messages to back your campaign.
  • The channels or tools for your campaigning (e.g. local press and radio, a street stall, social media)
  • What materials you might need, leaflets, posters, banners, placards etc
